History

John and Judy Callears' goal was to bring the same quality seafood they were accustomed to living on the coast of Maine to the Twin Tiers. While serving in the Navy in Brunswick, Maine, John Callear began working part time in the seafood industry. As time went on he realized there was a great need for transportation of seafood from central Maine to upstate New York and all of Pennsylvania.

When the Callears first opened the store in Elmira, John himself, would make the 1,400 mile roundtrip on a weekly basis to the coast of Maine and return to Elmira with thousands of pounds of seafood to ensure that he was getting the best seafood he possibly could for his customers. Throughout the years Maine Harvest  has stuck to the philosophy that we would never sell any seafood to anyone that we wouldn’t take home and prepare ourselves. As the demand for quality seafood increased, Callear realized the long hours on the road were taking away from what he truly enjoyed which was dealing with all of his daily retail customers. As time went on, it was clear that both John, Judy, and their customers would benefit from the Callears spending more time at the store rather than behind the wheel. By utilizing an overnight freight company John realized getting daily shipments was far better than weekly shipments for both him and his customers.

Over the past 28 years, Maine Harvest has gained the loyalty and trust of all of its customers which has been key in the growth of the company. On April 14, 2008 two of those loyal customers, Tom and Maria Landy, purchased Maine Harvest Seafood from the Callears. They have continued to bring the finest and freshest seafood available from all of New England and the eastern provinces of Canada.  Since they have owned the store, Maine Harvest has grown even more and established itself as a dependable seafood provider for the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

By setting higher standards over the past 28 years, we realize how much we value our customers, our community, and the relationships we have with both. We would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to continue to be a thriving business in our local community.
